    Everyone deserves access to great places — spaces that inspire, that offer smart solutions, that elevate the everyday.
  	

As architects, we have so much more opportunity than we’ve been led to perceive—opportunities for craft and beauty in the commonplace, for valuing the insights of a wide range of people, for taking pride in using our skills to reduce barriers, for playful solutions to serious challenges, for careful use of our clients’ and our planet’s limited resources.
      WORKSHOP starts each project with questions to challenge our preconceptions. We do not pretend to know everything. We include the people who will use a building or space as collaborators in the creative process to make spaces and places that inspire and open up new possibilities. We respect and value what is already there before proposing something new.

Facilitating a Focus Group on school design in St. Lucia 


		Workshop has a team of people with wide-ranging skills and exceptional talents from expertise in design for people with special needs to sustainable construction to art in public places and health and housing. What we all have in common is a commitment to making places that improve people’s daily lives.
  	

    	Everyone on our team is involved in generating ideas and creative solutions. We take a collaborative approach at all stages of a project from design to construction administration. Our open environment promotes sharing and learning. We provide opportunities for all members of our team to learn and grow, and to follow their interests and present their ideas.
      WORKSHOP values the people who we work with and who we work for, this includes the client, the people using the spaces, and all the people who may be affected by the designs we propose. We offer up to one percent of our time annually to pro bono work for non-profit organizations that seek to end homelessness, support equity or address climate change. We strive to continually improve and learn to meet our commitment to inclusive practices.

The
redesigned Hamilton Children’s Museum expands the building’s programming,
improves its accessibility and strengthens the relationship between the
building and park.


	Hamilton
Children’s Museum has been providing family-friendly learning opportunities
from an 1875 farmhouse in Gage Park for forty years.

&#38;nbsp;

The need for improved
accessibility and more programming space led to the expansion of the current
facility.

A 3700 square foot addition clad in blue glazed block doubles
the occupancy and makes more space for exhibitions, seating and a new
barrier-free front entrance that can accommodate the arrival of 60 children at
once.

A gabled-roof addition with a colourful, child-focused design that
nods to domestic form and scale, with a variety of materials and spaces
to explore.


The Hamilton Children’s Museum Addition won a 2025 Hamilton Urban Design Award, Honourable Mention&#38;nbsp; in the Public Buildings category!Workshop and the Hamilton Children’s Museum staff
collaborated on a feasibility strategy in 2012 and then upgrades to the
heritage building in 2015.

The main entrance was returned to the front of the house,
along with a playful ramp designed as an inhabited hedge.

The small foyer and hallway used to create bottlenecks. The new entry space is expanded

A glazed “link” lined with yellow tapered steel columns provides
breathing space between the original house’s red brick facade and the wood
millwork that fronts the new spaces.

The house pre-dated Gage Park, so it did not connect with the green space.

After the addition, the museum now acts as a gateway into
the 71-acre park, opening exhibits to landscape views and covered outdoor
spaces.

The building wraps around three mature oak trees to claim a secure area for
outdoor education – planting and a perimeter fence secure the space. 
The trees
help to shade the south and west glass facades in the summer.

The landscape uses the hedge motif from Gage Park’s
formal gardens, a device that oscillates between form and function, landscape and
architecture.

A LIFT WAS ADDED TO THE 2ND FLOOR OFFICES OF THE HERITAGE BUILDING

Low maintenance native plants like serviceberry, black chokeberry,
echinacea, nodding wild onion and mosquito grass act as a natural fence
surrounding the south courtyard and existing oak trees. They provide textural
interest around the building, and winter structure to the garden.

Hiatus House Transitional Housing will create a secure and supportive environment for women and children in Windsor rebuilding their lives after experiencing violence.

The new 40 apartment building will provide up to two years of accommodation to help women and their families who are leaving the emergency shelter program and need help to transition into permanent housing.

The goal of the design is to make a building that supports safety, dignity, and everyday convenience.Nested and interconnected women-centre design objectives, drove the decision-making from the neighbourhood scale to the apartment unit.


The building has four layers of access: from neighbourhood to service and community spaces to resident-only shared areas and finally to private apartments.

The L-shaped building form encloses a protected courtyard that provides a safe outdoor space, with views from inside to outside allowing mothers to watch their children at play.

The courtyard is protected by a privacy screen that sits on a garden wall with planting beds and seating.


A shift in material and colour on the courtyard facades mark the transition to the safe space within.

The main entrance on Louis Avenue is tucked away from the sidewalk, visibly signaling visitors’ intent to enter the airlock vestibule. 

It is also aligned directly with non-profit Hiatus House’s existing emergency shelter’s front door for rapid staff response in emergencies.

ENTRANCE ON THE BUILDING’S SOUTHEAST CORNER

Making residents feel secure from the moment they arrive at the building until they are in the privacy of their own apartment is fundamental. Therefore the routines of daily activities such as bringing in groceries or taking out trash are carefully considered.


Corridors and common areas are designed with clear site lines that give residents a sense of safety, and to allow mothers to monitor their children playing while they are cooking, doing the laundry or smoking.

At the apartment scale, the design focuses on creating spaces that can be adapted to feel like home. Apartments are planned for flexibility, accommodating different cultural and family arrangements.

Punched windows provide privacy and deep, bench-height sills. The corner apartments on Chatham Street benefit from views across the park to the Detroit River.


Accessibility is built into every unit. Apartments feature large washrooms, wide entrances and doors that accommodate strollers, groceries, and visitors using mobility devices.

UPPER FLOOR PLAN


Bedrooms are sized to allow varied uses—from parents and children sharing a room, to caregiver accommodation, to multiple children, or even housing several single women together.


Each floor has a separate quiet room that can be used to study, for a job interview or to take a sensitive call.


The building, currently in the design stage,&#38;nbsp; is being developed to achieve Passive House certification. Passive House standards helps&#38;nbsp; to reduce energy use for heating and cooling but will also create a healthy and comfortable indoor environment for residents.

The renovation was later expanded to include a holistic review of the building envelope with the objective of decreasing carbon emissions within the campus-wide “New Zero Carbon Roadmap” initiative, which aims to reach net-zero carbon emissions on campus by 2050.

The original limestone solar shading is failing and cannot be repaired or replicated. Therefore, the screen designs were given a new visual expression working within the existing 


façade


 proportions.

The name “Unfinished House” refers to an aesthetic attitude, an approach to material reduction, and budget restraint that leaves parts of the design incomplete.

The two bedroom, two bathroom home is a pilot for panelized prefabricated construction. The home has no basement to keep the concrete/carbon footprint to a minimum, so the heat pump and ERV units are tucked into the roof line, accessed from a catwalk on the mezzanine.

The design language, materiality and colour selection of the home is taken from rural Ontario forms and beach house vernacular as the area mixes farms, seasonal homes and year-round residences.

Unlike many contemporary projects, there is a purposeful restraint in glazing. This is a suburban-scaled site, but with the careful window placement there is a feeling of being alone in the pine oak savanna landscape.

are placed to maximize cross-ventilation from the lake breezes.&#38;nbsp;
For privacy, the only windows on the two
sides are small square vents.

The thick, highly-insulated walls create deep
window sills that are placed at seating, desk and counter heights to make use
of the extra space.


	Self-finishing materials were selected to reduce resources and reveal the building’s component parts.

The home has a self-contained in-law suite with its own exterior door. An internal sliding door connects the two units, the kitchenette then doubles as a bar for the screened porch.

Offsite construction was selected to reduce
waste, to speed up installation time and to improve quality/performance.

	
During the design stage the architects shared a computer model back and
forth with the fabricator. 
All the framing elements
were modelled, which allowed air barrier continuity to be considered at panel
joints in 3D.

Plumbing and electrical services were grouped into areas to be
concealed, complete with in-slab conduit stubs to avoid passing through areas
of visual-grade exposed framing.

site, not a kit of parts meant to be repeated. 
The design and construction process

 – 

 using a panelized high-performance envelope

 – 

is repeatable. Panelized
prefabrication is much more flexible spatially and easier to transport than volumetric modular prefab, so it is more readily applied to a range of building projects.

After testing a high performance prefab panel in this small project, we are now using them to overclad an existing 16-unit seniors residence for the Toronto Community Housing Corporation to meet EnerPHit (the Passive House standard for renovations). 
By using a panel system, residents will be able to
stay in place during construction. On-site construction time, dust and
noise can be minimized, and the building’s energy and green-house gas use will be reduced by 90%.

For us the project was a test to
first understand the constraints of off-site fabrication, and then to push
these limits. For example, by using visual grade wood for the framing and sheathing (a first for
the panel manufacturer) we sought to expand the already impressive waste reduction and material economy potential
presented by the prefabrication process.”

The installation bubblelung was
commissioned for the reopening of the Small Arms Inspection Building, a World
War Two munitions plant that has recently been transformed into a cultural
hub.


The ten-foot tall pink lung expands and
contracts at the top of the red brick chimney of the former coal-fired factory
where women once built and tested guns.

Made with the same simple technology
used for all-weather outdoor advertising inflatables, the installation was
designed to mark the building’s courtyard entrance and to signal the building’s
new use from the street.

	Unfortunately, on the
day of installation, a flock of chimney swifts — an endangered bird species
that nests in disused chimneys — was discovered on the site.

We were tasked to design a creative studio space for Seneca College’s School of Marketing to convey the spirit of a professional marketing agency’s studio.
    

The marketing agency provides students an opportunity to put theory into practice by working directly with clients on marketing and media projects so they’ll be industry ready upon graduation.

The clients wanted an active learning classroom with state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment that could transform into an event and gallery space.

The room has a range of surfaces to balance acoustic properties with functional surfaces writeable walls, pinboards and white screens.

Through a naming competition, staff and students voted for the name Studio 67 – after the year 1967 when Seneca College was founded. 
We incorporated the name into a backlit blade sign visible down the corridor.

Colour was used&#38;nbsp; to&#38;nbsp; add visual interest and to break up the space into different zones and functions.

	
To provide a multi-purpose space with function and flexibility, we selected sliding walls and furniture that could be reconfigured for different tasks and lessons.

When we sat down as a group to discuss
how we wanted our new studio to look and feel, our team found that we all
wanted a variety of spaces — for sitting, working standing up, reading,
meeting, and private conversations.&#38;nbsp;

We like to eat lunch together, so the
kitchen is designed like a comfortable café that can accommodate individuals or
a larger group. When seated at the kitchen’s
oak and felt bench, eye level is in line with a groundscape of native plants
and grasses.

We
wanted workspace dividers that would provide some privacy and sound isolation
without blocking light or sightlines.

We wanted bright colours, and plants! So
many plants. They extend the West Toronto Railpath greenery inside. 


	As an extension of the plant-theme, we added
terracotta tile and feature lights by Hand &#38;amp; Eye Studio. The passing GO Trains inspired the dark
green exposed ceiling.

The
resulting studio takes inspiration from the ethos of the Eames House and the
colour theory of Le Corbusier, while also considering staff health and
well-being and supporting a positive work atmosphere. 


	Throughout, we used simple,
materials that are non-toxic and consider acoustics and comfort. For example,
linoleum flooring covers the desktops — it’s soft for wrists, easy to write on.

custom-built desks have cut-outs for cords and accessories and deep shelves to
store full-scale drawings.

To keep the long views of the railpath and to maximize
daylight and fresh air in the studio, the service spaces – including the
staircase, washrooms and storage, are contained within a two-story box, wrapped
in rift cut white-oak veneer, punctured by frameless doors and minimal hardware.


The service box reveals a bright orange interior with supply cabinets in
plastic laminate, natural rubber stairwell treads and painted walls.

A series of movable
oak and mint-green fins control the light and view in the large meeting room,
and pinboard panels rotate to open the room to the main space.

“It’s
always a fun challenge designing your own space. We started this project with a
design charette, and the ideas were endless — the difficult part was trying to
edit them down and hone in on final materials. We learned early on that there
is such a thing as ‘too much colour,’ but in the end I think we achieved the
right balance.”
